Hello! Hope you had a wonderful start of the new decade. My first month has been full of blessings and lessons that I wanted to share. One of my goals for the new year is to write more and so I will be trying to create a blog post every few weeks.
I began the new decade DJing events with NOWHERE NYE and QPOC. Emma has an incredible talent for interior decorating. Node 594 was turned into a disco space club, complete with a star tunnel! I also celebrated my one year anniversary DJing with QPOC. Both events were incredibly successful and I was happy to ring in the new year with all the lovely party people.
I also have to give a big shout out to my friends at Grippin' Grain for celebrating 100 parties over a decade and closing it out on that night as well. I'll never forget all the great memories and music from GG nights, so thank you Tim, Lonnie, and Fraser.
From January 8th-12th, I was in Los Angeles for work and play. Big Picture Learning is embarking on a year long research project to find out what the impact of learning through interests and internships. I was honoured to be 1/5 Learning Through Internship Coordinators chosen to be a part of the research project. I look forward to seeing the valuable research to come out of this project.
I was very happy to spend the weekend with my cousins catching up and exploring Universal Studios. I am a Harry Potter head, so you can imagine how happy I was to visit the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I practically exploded with happiness.
While I was in Los Angles, CBC published a feature article and video on my work. Thank you Genie and Quan for asking me to be a part of this project. I am grateful to do the work that I do in my community and having it spotlighted was a blessing. You can check out the article here.
Last weekend, B.O.S.S. Dance Empire presented our first showcase with our adult, teen, and junior teams. It was a beautiful show with many heartwarming moments. Check out our pro team performing a new 90s set choreographed by myself and Genie. Shout out to the core team for coming together and demonstrating the power of authentic and meaningful collaborative work.
Thank you to Mike at Bar I, Davis at CKUW, Eric and Fettah and FridayKnights, and Tracy for having me DJ at their events. Every time I play for the public, I feel the growth and improvement in my skills and I can't thank the people in my community enough for giving me these opportunities.
Some of the challenges I decided to take on this month was to take close look at my financial life and make some changes in order to reach some new goals this year. Full disclosure, I was forced to take a hard look at my finances because I was the victim of bank fraud twice during the holiday break. A gentle reminder friends, please be aware of where your banking info is. The hackers found my info in an old PayPal account that I hadn't used in a decade (Ebay sneaker buying days -_-).
This week there two major family events. My dad turned T1 (which is code for I think 76). I also suddenly lost my god brother, Kuya Gary. I needed to take time to process this death in my family. Thank you to my friends and colleagues for providing me with a safe space to voice what I needed.
I am learning to be confident in my voice.
To not be embarrassed to ask for help.
To ask for what I need, when I need it.
Most of all, be thankful for every moment and lesson.
